Lookout Operated Warning Systems (LOWS) use a manual radio hand-switch, operated by a Lookout positioned at an appropriate sighting distance, to give adequate warning to track workers of an approaching train.


The main benefits of LOWS include:

  • Reduced protection staff to warn track workers – no assisted lookouts required
  • Provides protection at night, or in poor visibility
  • Gives access to the track for mobile maintenance patrols or short duration worksites


How does LOWS work?


Activation:

When the Lookout spots a train, a radio hand-switch (called a HSF or HSF-L) is used to send a radio signal to the worksite. The radio warning signal is received by radio controller unit (called the EZE or EZE-L) which processes the signal and then activates mobile radio warning units (called EWK, EPW, WK or EWK-L’s) which delivers a warning to the workgroup.

Cancellation:

The warning is cancelled by a LOWS controller on the worksite using the radio control unit (EZE or EZE-L).
